I’ve been an artist for a little while now, and I’ve had the dream of supporting myself and family with the work I create. However Something that I have often struggled with, and that has held me back in the past, is the idea of consumerism and the fact that I am creating a product to add to the already oversaturated market of home decor.
This brings me to the decision to overhaul the way I create and sell work. More and more, art prints have become the norm for artists to actually earn a living with their artwork. Because let’s face it, unless you’re selling each painting for thousands of dollars or more, there’s simply isn’t enough time or energy to create (at least in the style I work) the amount of artwork needed to support a normal healthy lifestyle.
All that said, the idea of mass producing my work by the hundreds or thousands just doesn’t sit right with me. After all, it’s the availability of art prints that has made selling originals so difficult. Back in the day, the only art available was original work and it was chosen carefully and cherished and passed down.
I'd like to bring that sort of feeling back to my collectors. In order to do so I've made the following decisions around my art prints:
1. My open edition prints will be retired periodically and are created on paper with the intention of being biodegradable at the end of their use. Although I hope they will be proudly displayed for decades. They are printed with archival inks and will last a lifetime of more!
2. My giclée canvas prints are created in very limited editions to combat the increasingly common mass production of art.
I hope you like the decisions I've made and are excited to see what new work I will have available throughout the year!
